Impact response of composite sandwich structures with toughened matrices

The mechanisms of failure a composite sandwich structure subjected to projectile impact have been investigated. results reveal the complex interplay between various damage dissipation mechanisms. effects modifying matrix skins with polysiloxane core–shell rubber (CSR) nanoparticles and silica were Single cantilever beam specimens tested evaluate skin-core debonding. addition CSR beyond 3 wt% causes change in mechanism from sub-interface foam interfacial when 6 9 are added. structures impacted an aluminium at 130 m/s. High speed cameras used obtain 3D digital image correlation back-face. Sectioning imaging panels revealed form front skin perforation delamination, crushing fracture core back-face also exhibited transition relating rear face debonding wt%. Panels containing low amounts resulted increased cracking, while point, widespread was observed. At CSR, optimum back deflection is achieved, lower delamination experienced. • Epoxy matrices can be toughened effectively using nanoparticles. Over toughening leads changes modes during quasi-static loading. Back-face preferred mode has high toughness.
